New Look for Dublin City Partnership

Rob Hartnett of Sport for Business is the new Chair of the Dublin City Council Sport and Wellbeing Partnership which met for the first time this year yesterday evening.

Hartnett takes over the chair from Fiona Coghlan who served since its creation two years ago and will remain on the advisory board.

John Costello from Dublin GAA, Michael Dawson from Leinster Rugby, Sinead McNulty from Dublin Institute of Technology, Richard Fahey from Tennis Ireland, Councillor Seamus McGrattan and Maurice Ahern are also staying on and they are joined this year by Mary O’Connor from the Federation of Irish Sport, John Foley from Athletics Ireland, Siobhan Fitzpatrick from the HSE and John Gillick from AIG.

The purpose of the Partnership Board is to guide and assist Dublin City Council in its strategy toward an investment in sport, recreation and wellbeing across the city.

It’s stated vision is “to enable and inspire all people in Dublin City to participate and engage in sport and physical activity to improve their general health and wellbeing.”

“With by far the largest local authority budget for sport in the country Dublin City Council is a major player in this area,” said Hartnett.

“Bringing together those partners who can help to leverage the investment for the greatest gain is a smart move the benefits of which will be seen in long-term planning but also in a number of new initiatives we are planning for 2018.”

“The remit of the partnership is to enhance the appeal of sport to those within communities and areas of the city where it is strong and to extend that to areas where it is not.”

“We have a dedicated team of 18 Sports development Officers and 20 co-funded officers across a range of sports through which the Council delivers hundreds of programmes to get people engaged in physical activity.”

“They are led by a fine Executive team under Jim Beggan, Antonia Martin and Shauna McIntyre.”

“It’s an honour to work alongside so many people doing what they can to promote sport in its widest context and it promises to be an exciting year ahead.”
